Brian Sinclair, Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Benchmark Lark Technology, shares his views on innovation in U.S. manufacturing in this month's Microwave Product Digest. He outlines how changes in consumer electronics manufacturing in the 1990's, including the rise of contract manufacturing and advances in high-volume manufacturing in Asia, changed the overall electronics manufacturing ecosystem in the United States. In time, those shifts led to challenges in manufacturing advanced systems for aerospace and defense, high performance computing, and other technology verticals that value manufacturing in the United States.
While some companies are investing in major manufacturing R+D initiatives, Brian suggests that EMS companies can serve as manufacturing experts across companies, benefiting partners via the cross-pollination of processes and ideas among market sectors. To be successful, EMS companies need to partner with OEMs to understand their product roadmaps and future needs, then invest in R+D and capabilities to meet those needs. He explains some of Benchmark's investments towards becoming this type of partner.
