ASML Suppliers' Day Award: Excellence in Sustainability

Reducing carbon emissions is critical to the semiconductor industry, but with vast, global supply chains, it is impossible for even large companies to achieve this alone. Benchmark’s collaboration with ASML provides a compelling case study in supply chain sustainability. ASML, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, has set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and value chain. To support these targets, Benchmark partnered closely with ASML to reduce Scope 3 emissions, focusing on minimizing our own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions related to ASML’s supply chain. Through grassroots innovation and targeted infrastructure investments, we aligned our sustainability initiatives with ASML’s vision for a low-carbon future.

A cornerstone of Benchmark’s sustainability achievements is the company’s Environmental Challenge competition, a grassroots initiative that empowered employees worldwide to identify and implement ideas for reducing the company’s carbon footprint. Teams across global sites contributed creative solutions, from optimizing energy use and waste reduction to piloting on-site renewable energy projects. This employee-driven approach fostered a culture of innovation and accountability, leading to tangible reductions in emissions and operational costs. Benchmark’s commitment to harnessing its workforce's ingenuity not only advanced its own sustainability objectives but also strengthened its ability to support ASML’s carbon-neutrality goals.

Our efforts have resulted in measurable environmental improvements for both Benchmark and ASML’s broader supply chain. Against a 2021 base year, we achieved an approximate 22% absolute reduction in our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, with some sites surpassing this figure thanks to investments in solar generation capacity and renewable energy credits (RECs). These actions directly contributed to ASML’s progress toward its carbon-neutrality targets, including achieving net zero in its operations by 2025 and significantly reducing value-chain emissions by 2030. This partnership exemplifies how supplier-customer collaboration can accelerate progress toward ambitious climate goals.
