Benchmark Electronics is committed to fulfilling its social and environmental responsibilities as a global corporate citizen. To enhance and effectively address our obligations, Benchmark Electronics has implemented manufacturing processes and material handling methods which meet the environmental requirements for the
European Directives (EU); Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).

In response to these directives Benchmark Electronics has invested in an extensive R&D program for assembling products with RoHS compliant materials. As part of this effort, various test vehicles were manufactured under DOE controls to select process chemistries and alloys along with defining the manufacturing process. To meet customer needs, Benchmark Electronics intends to support both tin-lead and lead-free manufacturing processes in the foreseeable future.

The supply chain is transitioning the content of their products away from the six materials restricted by the Directives. Some vendors are switching to RoHS compliant parts and not offering tin-lead versions. Many suppliers are not changing their component part numbers, but will indicate RoHS compliant parts by date code. Benchmark will work closely with our customers to manage these material challenges.

Benchmark Electronics will continue to effectively support our customers through this transition and offers technical services to assist in this effort. These services include:

• Assist in defining a WEEE strategy for customers’ product sold in Europe
• Assist in defining a RoHS compliant transition strategy for our customers’ products
• Migrate products to compliance
  • Perform RoHS compliant BOM scrubs
  • Second source non-compliant material
  • Product re-design when alternates are not found
  • Product qualification and launch
  • Supply chain development
